A crimson magical cloak with ornate gold trim displayed on a mannequin stand in a dark gothic chamber, surrounded by purple mist and candlelight.
The Cloak of Lust rests upon a shadowed stand, its crimson fabric shimmering with forbidden magic and an aura that promises both power and peril.

A crimson masterpiece woven with seductive magic, luring hearts and bending wills to its wearer’s desire.

Like the hypnotic pull of a succubus in Dungeons & Dragons, the manipulative charm of Loki, or the dangerous allure seen in The Witch, the Cloak of Lust captures the intoxicating power of temptation and control. This item draws on familiar fantasy themes of beauty masking danger, offering a compelling hook for campaigns centered around manipulation, desire, and consequence.

Have you ever wanted to weave the Seven Deadly Sins into your Dungeons & Dragons 5e campaigns? If so, the Cloak of Lust is a captivating choice—a magical artifact that embodies the essence of Lust and the irresistible desire to be adored. This cursed item introduces an element of intrigue and unpredictability, allowing Dungeon Masters to challenge their players with temptation and charm.

The Cloak of Lust is an enchanting garment of unparalleled beauty. Its fabric shimmers with a captivating interplay of light and shadow, as though woven from moonlight itself. Silky and supple, the cloak drapes sensuously over the wearer, highlighting their form with an unearthly elegance. When donned, the cloak heightens the wearer’s physical allure, significantly boosting their charisma and rendering them almost impossible to ignore. Allies, adversaries, and even creatures such as monsters or the undead are drawn to the wearer with an irresistible fascination.

However, the cloak is more than a tool for charm; it is a dangerous curse. It whispers seductive urgings to the wearer, encouraging them to manipulate and beguile those around them—regardless of the potential consequences. Whether it's captivating a monarch, seducing a consort, or ensnaring a noble heir, the wearer is driven to test boundaries, often with perilous results. The Cloak of Lust grants immense power but exacts a heavy toll, luring its bearer into precarious alliances and treacherous encounters.

As a Dungeon Master, this item presents unique challenges. While charm effects are potent, many high-level monsters and enemies are resistant or immune to being charmed, limiting its impact as players advance. To keep the cloak relevant, consider designing encounters where charm effects still matter, such as by including weaker, charmable minions in the midst of powerful foes. Alternatively, allow the cloak’s influence to create nuanced roleplay opportunities, as the wearer becomes a lightning rod for attention—wanted or not. Minor charm effects could also sway enemies in subtle ways, ensuring the cloak remains both a blessing and a curse throughout the campaign.

Cloak of Lust (Cursed Artifact Item)

The Cursed Cloak of Lust is a wicked artifact infused with dark magic. It alters your physical form to appear irresistibly attractive to all beings, exuding whatever traits they most desire. By expending a charge from the cloak, the wearer can enchant, manipulate, or even dominate others—ranging from mere distraction to overwhelming control—tapping into their deepest desires and submissive urges.

Curse:

Although the cloak grants immense power, it also radiates a constant aura of negative magic that affects everything around you — including your allies. Its influence makes you arrogant and self-absorbed, drawing attention away from others and even from your own goals. Your presence is so overpowering that NPCs are distracted by you regardless of who is speaking. As a result, you and your party suffer disadvantage on all Charisma checks.

Ability:

  • Activation: Free Action

  • Charges: 1DC: 13 + PB

  • Usage: Once per long rest use a charge and roll a D100.

Effect Table:

Minor Charm (1–50)

  • Mechanics: Choose up to ½ PB creatures within 30 feet. Each must succeed on a Charisma saving throw or have disadvantage on attack rolls against you for 1 minute. They may repeat the save at the start of each turn.

  • Visual: Your eyes gleam with an enchanting shimmer, and your voice drips with honeyed temptation.

Enthralling Presence (51–80)

  • Mechanics: Choose a creature within 30 feet. It must make a Charisma save or be charmed by you for PB turns. While charmed, it cannot attack you. Save repeats at end of turn.

  • Visual: A seductive aura pulses around you like a slow heartbeat, entrancing your target.

Irresistible Desire (81–95)

  • Mechanics: Choose a creature within 30 feet. On a failed Charisma save, it is affected by the Suggestion spell for PB rounds (no concentration). Save at end of each turn.

  • Visual: A violet mist spirals from your mouth, whispering irresistible compulsions.

All-Consuming Passion (96–100)

  • Mechanics: Choose a creature within 30 feet. It must make a Charisma save or be affected by Dominate Beast/Humanoid (your choice) for PB rounds. Save at end of each turn.

  • Visual: Your presence becomes godlike—eyes burn with intensity as your will overwhelms theirs.

Thought Process:

I really enjoyed the gameplay mechanics of the Succubus, especially their ability to charm party members and turn them against their allies. Charm-based casters in general offer a lot of strategic value with abilities like Suggestion or even Mass Suggestion. These spells are excellent for extracting vital information from enemies—like uncovering the identity of the campaign's main antagonist.

When designing abilities, this one stood out as a great fit for my vision of progressive power scaling. It starts by affecting up to three monsters for two to three turns, and by level 20, it lasts up to six turns. Among all the cloaks, this one applies the longest-lasting negative effect, making it exceptionally powerful. It’s also the only cloak that can prevent monsters from harming you—or even compel them to assist you—thanks to Suggestion.

In-Game Usage:

This cloak is a versatile item that can be used by all classes. A fighter might use it to distract grunts effectively, making it a valuable tool in combat. Meanwhile, a sorcerer could use it to gather information from grunts or villains, where it remains just as effective. Overall, there are no significant drawbacks to this cloak, aside from the fact that it doesn’t scale well with higher-level gameplay.

To address this, consider giving the cloak to a monster when the party reaches a high level, such as 10 or 15. It could serve as a key item required to summon an evil creature, while also being beneficial in other ways. Alternatively, you might allow this cloak to be worn in addition to other cloaks for added utility.

In terms of introducing the cloak, it can be added at any stage of your campaign, particularly when players are at higher levels, around 7 to 15, as the campaign approaches its climax. One creative introduction could involve a scenario where the cloak is worn by a female leader of a group of male monsters, such as ogres or giants, or even succubi or incubi. The twist? The wearer under the cloak is actually an ugly creature, like a sea hag, disguised as a succubus. This could lead the party to mistakenly believe they are dealing with a powerful, new type of succubus—only to realize the truth too late.

I’d love to hear how you incorporate this cloak into your games! Please share your experiences and any interesting stories from your adventures.
