A Soul Reaper Warlock phases through stone, wielding an ethereal necrotic scythe as green-black death magic coils around their ghostly form.

From the chilling silhouettes of the Grim Reaper in folklore to iconic portrayals like Death in Puss in Boots, the Soul Society’s shinigami in Bleach, the Nazgûl of The Lord of the Rings, or comic incarnations such as Death of the Endless in The Sandman, the image of death as a thinking, purposeful hunter has captured imaginations across cultures. The Soul Reaper Warlock subclass channels this universal archetype, offering players the chance to step into the role of an ethereal executioner—an agent of mortality who walks between worlds, scythe in hand, hunting souls that dare to linger beyond their appointed end.

Mechanically and thematically, the Soul Reaper Warlock blends the core warlock chassis with a rogue- or monk-adjacent combat style. While retaining the class’s traditional fragility in hit points and armor, the subclass introduces a conjured scythe fueled by Charisma, fear-based battlefield control through supernatural eyes, and later an ethereal body that allows movement through creatures and terrain. Its features emphasize necrotic damage, undead hunting, and survival through resistances rather than raw armor or hit point increases.

This subclass is particularly appealing to players who enjoy strong narrative identity and thematic immersion. Players who want to portray a grim reaper, soul hunter, or deathbound assassin—and who enjoy mobility, intimidation, and tactical positioning—will find the Soul Reaper satisfying. It rewards those who prefer weaving weapon attacks and spells together while embracing a darker, more ominous fantasy role.

Dungeon Masters allowing the Soul Reaper Warlock should expect a character who excels against undead and who can bypass traditional spatial obstacles later in a campaign. Encounters relying heavily on undead enemies may skew in the player’s favor, while environments that emphasize verticality, hazards, or fear interactions can highlight the subclass’s strengths. DMs are encouraged to balance encounters thoughtfully and to lean into the eerie narrative elements provided by the scythe, the eyes, and the ethereal body.

Soul Reaper Warlock — Subclass Description

In the world of Dungeons and Dragons, some warlocks do not bind themselves to demons, celestials, or inscrutable cosmic entities, but instead to the harbingers of death themselves—the grim reapers. These beings are the incarnations of mortality, arbiters of the final passage, and relentless hunters of souls that resist the natural order. A Soul Reaper Warlock may have stood on the brink of death and bargained for more time, or sworn vengeance after witnessing loved ones twisted into undeath. Whatever the origin, such a pact marks the warlock as an instrument of death’s will.

Mechanically, the Soul Reaper Warlock centers on the Reaper’s Scythe as a Charisma-based weapon that grows in power alongside the warlock. The subclass emphasizes necrotic damage, fear effects, and limited but potent access to death-themed magic. Its combat role favors mobility, harassment, and control rather than sustained frontline durability, culminating in an ethereal transformation that allows the warlock to move through creatures and terrain while resisting most forms of damage.

Level 1 Features:

Age of Death:

You age half as fast as your normal race as well magic can’t increase your age.

Scythe of Death:

At the 3rd level, you unlock the formidable Scythe of Relapse. You can weild it at any time.

At any time you can summon an ethereal scythe into your hand that can only be wielded by you.

By using an action or bonus action, you can strike a creature with this scythe. It has a reach of 10 feet and inflicts necrotic or radiant damage.

You roll a number of D8 dice for damage equal to half of your proficiency modifier (rounded down).

You gain temp HP equal to the damage you rolled by the scythe.

While treating the scythe as a normal weapon, you rely on your charisma rather than strength or dexterity for both attack rolls and additional damage.

Reasoning:

Age of Death functions as a purely thematic feature supporting character backstory and longevity. Scythe of Death is the subclass’s core mechanic, encouraging weapon-based combat alongside spellcasting. Its scaling damage and temporary hit points provide an alternative to relying solely on Eldritch Blast while maintaining comparable damage output and enabling flexible action economy.

Level 6 Features:

Talk to the Dead:

With this newfound ability, you can effortlessly communicate with the undead by casting the spell "speak with the undead" at your command. You also have the "Summon Undead" spell perminantly.

Eyes of a Reaper:

Upon reaching the 6th level, you unlock the extraordinary power of the eyes of the grim reaper. With this ability, you can perceive the life force of others while emanating a sense of terror that reminds them of the inevitable presence of death.

As a free action you can activate the eyes. Until start of your next turn any creature that gazes into your eyes must make a wisdom saving throw or be frightened of you. You also can see if the creature is bloodied or not. You also have advantage on all attack rolls against creatures frightened of you as well you can add an extra dice in damage rolls against them.

Reasoning:

Talk to the Dead expands narrative and investigative utility, enabling interaction with deceased NPCs. Eyes of a Reaper enhances battlefield control by adding fear effects tied directly to Scythe of Death, while granting tactical information through hit point awareness without directly altering damage values.

Level 10 Features:

Body of Death:

While the eyes are active, you acquire a corporeal manifestation resembling Death and the grim reaper. Your form becomes ethereal, allowing you to traverse between the ethereal plane and your current plane of existence.

Furthermore, you can effortlessly pass through non-ethereal beings as if it were regular movement. If you conclude your turn in the proximity of a living creature, you are forcibly displaced to a random location. You also gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed while in this form.

Reasoning:

Body of Death represents the full physical transformation into a reaper-like entity. It provides survivability through broad resistances and unparalleled mobility, allowing the Soul Reaper Warlock to navigate battlefields and environments in ways reminiscent of other high-resilience classes while remaining distinct.

Level 14 Features:

Being One With Death:

Upon reaching the 14th level, you acquire a fragment of the grim reaper, imbued with either its touch or aura. Once during an extended rest, you possess the ability to unleash the devastating power of the Finger of Death or Circle of Death spells. The level at which you can cast these spells is determined by half of your warlock level, with a maximum casting level of 9.

Reasoning:

These capstone features elevate the Soul Reaper Warlock’s threat level against high-tier enemies. Warlocks can only cast up to 5th level this lets them access to an additional 9th level spell slot so they can combat monsters that Tiamet that can only be hurt with 7 - 9th level spells.

Soul Reaper Warlock in Campaign Setting

Build Ideas

The best ability scores for the Soul Reaper Warlock prioritize Charisma as the primary stat, as it governs spellcasting and scythe attacks. Dexterity is recommended as a secondary score to improve Armor Class due to reliance on light armor. Maximizing Charisma and Dexterity supports both offensive capability and survivability within the subclass’s intended playstyle.

The subclass text recommends prioritizing ability score improvements over feats, though several feats are discussed. Mobile enhances speed and avoids opportunity attacks, Resilient improves Constitution saving throws, War Caster aids concentration, Eldritch Adept expands invocation options, and Telekinetic or Telepathic support thematic utility.

Multiclassing options discussed include paladin, fighter, sorcerer, and bard. Fighter offers Action Surge, Second Wind, and Champion’s increased critical chance. Sorcerer and bard provide additional spellcasting flexibility, skills, and class-specific features such as metamagic or bardic inspiration.

Exploration Interactions:

Exploration utility is limited, but ethereal movement allows the Soul Reaper Warlock to bypass walls, floors, and traps, reducing reliance on traditional stealth or disarmament.

Environmental Interactions:

The subclass performs strongly in hazardous environments due to widespread damage resistance, making encounters involving fire, lava, or similar dangers more manageable.
