As a chaos domain cleric, every time you cast a spell or use your channel divinity, you risk a wild magic surge that could be both beneficial or harmful to you and your comrades. If you crave adventure and enjoy rolling the dice on the wild magic table, then this is the class for you. Chaos Domain Cleric Subclass Description

Level 1 Subclass Feature:

Selected Spell List:

  • 1st - Chaos Bolt, Tashas Hideous Laughter

  • 2rd - Crown of Madness, Tashas Mind Whip

  • 3th - Fireball, Thunder Wave

  • 4th - Polymorph,Raulothim's Psychic Lance

  • 5th - Danse Macabre, Wall of Force, Calm During Chaos

At 1st level, you're still learning to harness the power of wild magic bestowed upon you by your patron. This intense focus has granted you a natural talent for adapting to any situation and a resistance to mental and physical afflictions. Your training has honed your ability to withstand the rigors of battle, granting you proficiency in Constitution Saving Throws.

Wild Magic Surge:

Starting when you choose this domain at 1st level, your spellcasting can unleash surges of untamed magic. Once per turn, the DM can have you roll a d20 immediately after you cast a spell of 1st level or higher. If you roll a 1, roll on the Wild Magic Surge table to create a magical effect. If the effect normally requires concentration, it doesn’t require concentration in this case; the spell lasts for its full duration. USE SORCERER WILD MAGIC TABLE

Reasoning:

Concentrating on spells can be a major challenge for magic users, particularly for those who specialize in chaos like the chaos domain cleric. This class frequently rolls on the wild magic surge table, which can result in unexpected and often detrimental effects such as exploding or transforming into a potted plant. These unpredictable events can severely hamper a cleric's ability to maintain concentration. One way to mitigate this risk is to cultivate a calm demeanor in the midst of chaos, which can increase proficiency in constitution saving throws. For a chaos domain cleric, the wild magic surge feature is an integral part of their identity, as it reflects their affinity for the unpredictable and chaotic forces of magic. Without wild magic surges, a cleric cannot truly claim to be a master of chaos.

Level 2 Subclass Feature:

Empower the Chaos:

The goal is to show those that wild magic gods should be the only golds. You gather the magic and release it stronger than you expected. When you cast a spell, you can choose to upcast it by 1 level. When the player uses this ability, they cause a wild magic surge. The ability can only be used equally to half the player's proficiency level.

Chanel Divinity: Chaos Divided

As a 2nd level character, you possess the power to manipulate chaos in a way that benefits or harms those around you. You can select a specific number of Allies and Enemies, equivalent to your proficiency level, who are within a 30-foot radius of your position. Your Allies will be granted a random positive effect from the wild magic table, while your Enemies will suffer a negative effect from the wild magic surge. It is important to note that positive effects may not always be advantageous and negative effects may not always be detrimental. The line between good and bad is not always clear-cut in the realm of wild magic.

[GOOD WILD MAGIC SURGE TABLE LINKS]

[BAD WILD MAGIC SURGE TABLE LINKS]

Reasoning:

In my opinion, it's crucial for wizards to have a way to enhance their magical abilities. I believe this concept extends to chaos domain clerics as well. What's interesting about this class is that it requires them to roll on the wild magic surge table, adding an element of unpredictability. It's worth noting that this feature won't make them overpowered since they can only use it up to half of their proficiency, which means that at level 20, they can only do it three times per long rest. Even a level 2 player can only use it once. However, what excites me the most about this class is their channel divinity. I've created personalized magic surge tables with a higher chance of either a good or bad outcome. These personal tables make it even more entertaining since the chaos domain cleric can impact their allies positively or negatively at random. The resulting chaos can be hilarious and incredibly enjoyable.

Level 6 Subclass Feature:

Let us throw a little chaos into the situation:

When reaching the 6th level, both monsters and characters acquire certain skills, but these abilities can always be improved or diminished. By using your reaction, you have the power to compel a creature or player up to 60 feet away from you to re-roll an attack, ability check, or saving throw. However, using this ability triggers a wild magic surge on yourself, adding an unpredictable element to the situation.

Reasoning:

At level 6, the chaos domain cleric possesses a unique ability that can impede foes and assist comrades. For instance, if an ally is struck by a dragon's breath and rolls a critical failure, the cleric may intervene and grant them a reroll to avoid imminent defeat. However, this skill is balanced by the need to roll on the wild magic table, which introduces an element of unpredictability and caution in the cleric's decision-making process. This limitation ensures that the feature remains powerful without becoming overpowered, as the cleric must weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks.

Level 8 Subclass Feature:

Controlled Chaos:

As you reach the 8th level, your bond with your divine entity strengthens, and you gain greater influence over the chaotic energy of the wild magic domain. Your deity's gift grants you additional command over the surges of your wild magic, enabling you to select from two results whenever you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table, instead of just accepting one.\

Reasoning:

This particular game feature functions exactly like the wild magic sorcerer ability, granting a higher likelihood of positive outcomes for players who are aligned with the chaos domain. Essentially, it provides a slight advantage to those who embrace unpredictability and disorder. There are no additional unique attributes to this feature, but its impact on the player's success rate in chaotic situations should not be underestimated.

Level 17 Subclass Feature:

Let us Share the Chaos:

When you reach the 17th level, you will become incredibly connected to the chaotic gods, granting you almost divine power and complete control over all forms of chaos. You will be motivated to spread the word of the chaotic gods and show others the immense potential that comes with following them. As a demonstration of your power, you will be able to recruit allies and cause your enemies to cast spells that result in a random outcome by having them roll on either the positive or negative wild magic surge table of your choosing. This ability can be activated equal to your proficiency modifier and resets after a long rest.

Reasoning:

The Chaos Domain Cleric is a crucial character in the game, as they bring about chaos. This means that whenever any magic is being cast, whether by an ally or an enemy, a wild magic surge effect is triggered. At level 17, players can expect these surges to be either beneficial or detrimental, adding to the excitement of playing as the Chaos Domain Cleric. Their unique abilities make them an incredibly powerful and exciting character to play.

Chaos Domain Cleric Subclass In Campaign Setting

Build Ideas:

To optimize your Chaos Domain Cleric, it's important to prioritize a high Wisdom and Constitution ability score. The former is crucial as it determines the strength of your spellcasting abilities, while the latter ensures that you have good health and high saving throws, which is especially important when concentrating on spells. However, being limited to only medium or light armor and simple weapons makes this class challenging. Without high Dexterity, your AC will be low and you may struggle to hit creatures with weapons. Therefore, it's recommended to rely more heavily on spellcasting. Feats such as Tough or Heavily Armored are useful to gain proficiency with heavy armor and increase AC.

For those interested in multiclassing, Fighter is a great option to consider as it allows you to cast more than one spell per round. Alternatively, Druid or Ranger can be useful for gaining access to additional spells from their respective spell lists. If you choose Druid, you will also gain the ability to Wild Shape, although this will only be available at the lower levels, and you won't be able to turn into larger beasts. However, the additional hit points that come with Wild Shape can be particularly advantageous for a Chaos Domain Cleric.

How to Play Subclass:

Social Interactions:

The cleric class is primarily focused on wisdom-based abilities and does not necessarily require a high charisma score. It's worth noting that clerics do not have any inherent features that enhance their social interactions with non-player characters (NPCs).

Combat Encounters:

This class truly excels in combat situations, especially when facing spell casters. Their skills allow them to effectively counter magical attacks. And let's not forget the wild magic surges that add an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to battles. It's a thrilling and dynamic experience that keeps everyone on their toes.

Exploration Encounters:

If you're venturing into dungeons or other areas that demand stealth or frequent acrobatic or athletic checks, the chaos domain cleric may not be the best companion for the journey. Their abilities are geared more towards creating disorder and unpredictability rather than finesse and physical prowess. So, you may want to consider finding a more suitable partner who can better assist you in such situations.

Environmental Interactions:

The domain of chaos can excel in environmental interactions, such as managing a volcano or an acid pool. However, the challenge lies in the unpredictable nature of their success, which is attributed to the potential for positive wild magic surges. These surges can occur unexpectedly and may cause unforeseeable consequences, making it difficult to rely solely on their abilities to manage hazardous situations.
